Why Take A Speech Course?

Speech courses equip students to be able to achieve the following:

1. Critically analyze and evaluate communication (written, oral, and/or multimodal) using various methods of rhetorical analysis.
2. Construct and present oral arguments with rhetorical goals including (but not limited to) informing and persuading.
3. Understand, and when applicable apply and extend, communication theory, concepts or models, critically engaging theory into practice in societal contexts.
4. Critically examine evidence for possible use in messages.
5. Reflect through their rhetorical choices an understanding of responsible communication ethics.
6. Explore connections between speaking and writing clearly, including similarities and differences among modes of communication.
7. Practice the exploration and dynamics of speechmaking, identifying processes, products, and relationships between processes and products.
